Modular Kitchen vs. Traditional Kitchen

July 12, 2015

In many ways, the kitchen is the center of family life. It is a place to cook meals, to gather for food and to strengthen your family bonding. As such, you will want to make the most of this very important space as you think about the design and construction.

As you plan your kitchen designs, beyond what type of cabinets you should buy or what appliance should go where, a key factor is the type of kitchen construction you would want to develop. A traditional kitchen design is the choice of many homeowners but modular kitchens can also be an attractive option, especially if you are looking to maximize space on a budget.

Traditional Kitchen

A traditional kitchen is exactly that, a traditional kitchen. It is a type of kitchen design where you choose cabinets, drawers, and counter space, all to your specifications. When designing your traditional kitchen, you need to start with the dimensions.

How do you make it functional for cooking, storage, and eating? Will the kitchen be an eat-in space or will you require a separate dining area? In a traditional kitchen, you will choose your basic features – cabinets, drawers, counter space. Thereafter, you can modify it based on your preference. Will your cabinets be wood or steel? Do you want laminated counter tops or perhaps a much more expensive marble finish?

Those are choices that will define your kitchen’s look, design, and – ultimately – cost. Counters, drawers, and cabinets are typically constructed based on your specs (width, height, length) and usually will be adjusted on site to fit the space. Depending on your needs and preferences, a traditional kitchen can be one of the most expensive rooms in your home.

Modular Kitchen

Modular kitchens, unlike traditional kitchens, are purchased as assembled modular structures. Instead of designing each piece separately, you will purchase modular kitchen as complete units. All pieces – from cabinets to counter tops – will come as a complete package. You will buy pre-made cabinets, including all parts, even the hardware, counter tops, and anything that is included in the kitchen arrangement. Modular systems also come included with all appliances such as dishwashers, microwaves, and refrigerators.

Modular does not, however, mean cheap or unattractive. Modular kitchens can come in a variety of styles, designs, colors, and accessories. Some of the more popular and high-end styles of kitchens incorporate stainless steel cabinets and accessories as well as ultra-modern designs.

Modular kitchens are also durable and make a perfect option in small, urban spaces. Why? Because it can easily be integrated in the space available and taken down just as easily. With numerous cities dense in population and low on space, modular kitchens are starting to gain traction in the Philippines. It will have to challenge though the popularity of traditional kitchens.
